I have to start with prayers for the families of those who died in that plane crash and the Army Black Hawk at Reagan Airport in Washington D.C. The investigation will go on for months. It appears to be pilot error on the part of the Black Hawk Army Helicopter. As a baby pilot, I have Air Traffic Control on my cell phone, allowing me to listen to ATC’s all over the world, which I’ll do couple times a week when board. So Sad!
Among those killed were two World Champion Russian figure skaters which got me thinking there have been a lot of sports stars that have died in plane crashes, including PGA Golfers Tony Lema and Payne Stewart. NASCAR drivers Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison. Boxing great Rocky Marciano. Norte Dame Hall of Fame super coach Knute Rockne, the great Kobe Bryant. In 1961, the entire United States Figure skating team died on a flight to the World Championships. And in 1970, all 37 players of the Marshal University Football team. All sad tragedies.
Moving on, look for a bunch of daily newspapers and magazines to close this year. I used to work and write for the New York Post, it is still going strong, as is the great Los Angeles Times. But papers in Baltimore, Houston and Seattle could be gone! And even Vogue, Expedia, Elle and Fortune magazines are in serious financial trouble.
Odds and Ends: I hear the new Ringo Star country album is fabulous! … A recent poll in New York City shows 72% of the people do not feel safe walking the streets. … One of my favorite bands is The Eagles and one of my favorite lead guitar players is The Eagles Steuart Smith. Sad to report Steuart has been forced to retire due to Parkinson Disease. Don’t tell my wife but I’m taking her to see the Eagles at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Valentines Day.
Quote of the Day: Gravity always gets me down.
