Friday Movie Reviews: Opening today, Our Friend, starring Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson and I loved it. It is a fabulous true story about a man and his wife and two kids living the dream only to learn Mom has terminal cancer. Being the dad, caretaker, breadwinner and everything else, Casey needs help and enter their best friend, played by Jason Segel. And if the true story isn’t compelling enough, the addition of their friend creates a great sidebar story in itself. Again, a true story, a comedy drama (4 Stars). … While Our Friend is playing at theaters, you’ll have to rent our next recommendation on Apple TV for the time being. It is Baby Done. An Australians/Kiwi movie about a couple that learns they are pregnant and decide to do a lot of the things now that they won’t be able to do when the baby arrives. While the husband is willing, mom is having a real problem excepting she’s going to have a baby. I think every first parent goes through this, but it is magnetized here and is heartwarming, humanizing and still funny. Love this movie, no stars really but the writing carries it (4 Stars).
Odds and Ends: A very good friend who attended Apple Valley H.S. in California’s high desert with Cuba Gooding Jr. tells me he was a great guy, funny and very popular. However since becoming a star, there’s been sexual harassment accusations and other negative things about Cuba. Proof that stardom can often change people. Case in point, another TV show to stream, Lovesick, a comedy from England about a guy who was an STD and has decided to track down all his former lovers to alert them and make things right.
Sports Shorts: Despite some good insights, I’ve never really cared for Alex Rodriguez as a baseball analyst and I’m surprised Alex got a huge raise and new contract. His information is pretty good, but his voice is irritating and sometime goofy and childish. … Now I know I haven’t been great picking games but I love KC and GB.
