Biggest news of the week, that Alec Baldwin will not face any criminal charges from the Rust shooting. I thought there would at least be a negligence charge, but the rumor is no charges.
Movie Reviews: When you here the name Guy Ritchie, you first thing you think of him being married to Madonna, however he has been a very successful movie writer, producer and director. With Sherlock Holmes, Snatch and Aladdin as part of his resume, and is currently working on Aladdin 2. But I want to talk about his latest movie, opening today, Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. Set during the Afghanistan War, Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a Sargent but Jake is out done by Dar Salim who plays his Afghan interpreter. As the war rages on, the two are on a mission to save Salim’s family who are being chased by the Taliban. The acting and story are solid, although, I worry it won’t do big box office (Rated R) – (2 Hours) – (3 Stars). By the way, Guy never went to film making school, college and didn’t finish High School.
But Hold on a minute, Somewhere in Queens, also opening today is Ray Ramano’s directing debut and Ray also stars, wrote the script and it is fabulous. Ray and his whole Italian family work at the family construction company, but it’s Ray’s High School son, called Sticks and played by newcomer Jacob Ward that this movie is all about. Sticks is a solid basketball player and while the family just assumes he will join the family business after graduation, Ray has much bigger hopes and dreams for his son and his basketball ability. And Sticks is in love but all is not going well and the plot thickens. Sticks’ mom is played by Laurie Metcalf who is hilarious, with one great one liner after another, and the girlfriend played by Sadie Stanley is perfect. As is this whole hilarious, heart strings pulling movie. I loved every part of this wonderful movie (Rated R) – (1 Hour, 46 Minutes) – (4 STARS). Both The Covenant and Somewhere in Queens are only in theaters starting today.
