Movie Review Friday: Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank. The world has turned against the cat kingdom, and there’s a goofy dog and a ridiculous samurai! Great news, kids under 12 will love it, it’s only 90 minutes and there are a few good laughs. Bad News, people over 12 will hate it, it’s 90 minutes and there are only a few laughs. However, this is a kids film and kids will love it (PG) – 1 Hour 37 Minutes) – (2 ½ Stars). Oh yeah here’s a shocker, co-written by Richard Pryor in treatment form back in 2004. … Next, Where The Crawdads Sing is a fabulous novel and while some times great novels don’t make great movies, I liked this one. A murder mystery set in the deep south about a hated orphan girl living in a marsh, who grows into a teenager and falls in love. But when her lover is found murdered, her life is turned upside down, the towns secrets are exposed and she is charged with the murder. (PG) – (2 Hours) – (3 Stars). And a sidebar, the 73 year old novel author, Delia Owens, is being questioned about a real life murder that occurred in 1996, so there could be more to this story than the movie. … And, The Gray Man. Despite holding it till the last minute for reviews, this is a solid film. An action, thriller costing $220 million, Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Billy Bob Thornton and a great supporting cast make this the best of the week (PG-13) – (2 Hours) – (3½ Stars).
Sports Shorts: Next week is Baseball All-Star game at played at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 1980. I love Dodger Stadium, built in 1962 and on Vin Scully Drive. It is my third favorite stadium. #1 is Wrigley Field, #2 Fenway Park, then Dodger Stadium.
Odds and Ends: One of the great buildings in Los Angeles is the L.A. Times building, but the Times has let go 70% of their staff and that great building has basically become a make shift, multi purpose sound stage for movies and TV shows. How sad.
