Movie Review Friday: While I mentioned Dear Santa last week, it is available everywhere and streaming this week, real letters sent to Santa at the North Pole, but answered by do-gooders. This film will bring a tear to your eye. (4 Stars). … And there’s, I’m Your Woman. This is a great movie starring Rachel Brosnahan, the wife of a criminal who robbed the mob she’s now being hunted by. The suspense is fabulous! A real thriller worth seeing on Prime Video. (4 Stars). … Unfortunately very few theaters are open and that’s the only place you can see, Nomadland starring Frances McDormand, in what has got to be an Oscar nomination performance. After losing her job, Frances lives with nomads and sees how the other side lives. (4 Stars).
Two other movies at theaters are, All My Life, and Half Brothers. Both stiffs. (2 Stars).
But I have five great documentaries starting with Zappa. From Frank’s fabulous, Mothers of Invention, to Help, I’m A Rock, to my favorite Zappa song lyric, “Watch where the huskies go and don’t you eat that yellow snow.” John Lennon, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger were regular visitors at Frank’s house when in town. He was their musical hero. He had a running war with Al Gore. His studio in the basement of his house was the best in Hollywood. Often called the king of Laurel Canyon and the father of an old friend, Moon Unit, creator of Valley Girl. Frank Zappa, a fabulous story playing in theaters and rentable on Prime. … You also have Robin Williams’ documentary, Robin’s Wish on Prime. … Don’t forget the Belushi documentary currently on Showtime and Prime. … And finally there’s Billie, the sad, amazing documentary of Billie Holiday. (4 Stars). … And remember, Mank, the story of old Hollywood debuting on Netflix. (4 Stars).
Smoking cigarettes in a SFO apartment carries a $500 fine and up to a year in jail. However, it’s perfectly legal to smoke pot in an apartment or in public places, no fines. Only in California folks.
